@article{hauser2021, abstract = {The increasing adoption of omnichannel strategies in recent years has led retail companies worldwide to fundamentally rethink the future role of their network of brick-and-mortar stores. One strategic option being pursued by many retailers is the transformation of the stationary store into a “smart store,” augmented by various digital services. However, an essential prerequisite for the success of smart store services is high quality of the underlying data generated through the use of technologies for tracking products and customer behavior. As a means of investigating the use of machine learning to improve data quality, the present study considers the example of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) as a technological infrastructure for tracking products in fashion retail. We examine electronic article surveillance and automated checkouts as practical use cases enabled by a classification model for the detection of product movements on the store floor. In order to identify an economically optimal configuration of the classifier, we develop a complementary service operations model that allows for determining the respective cost impact. @article{hauserforthcomingtowards, abstract = {Automated checkout systems promise greater sales due to an improved customer experience and cost savings because less store personnel is needed. The present design-oriented IS research study is concerned with an automated checkout solution in fashion retail stores. The implementation of such a cyberphysical system in established retail environments is challenging as architectural constraints, well-established customer processes, and customer expectations regarding privacy and convenience impose limits on system design. To overcome these challenges, the authors design an IT artifact that leverages an RFID sensor infrastructure and software components (data processing and prediction routines) to jointly address the central problems of detecting purchases in a reliable and timely fashion and assigning these purchases to individual shopping baskets. The system is implemented and evaluated in a research laboratory under real-world conditions. The evaluation indicates that shopping baskets can indeed be detected reliably (precision and recall rates greater than 99%) and in an expeditious manner (median detection time of 1.03 s). Against this backdrop, this paper focuses on the design of product recommendation systems for fashion stores. Our research particularly aims at answering the issues of whether and to what extent (i) the sensing capabilities of smart fashion retail environments and (ii) the integration of contextual information can improve the quality of such recommendations. To this end, we consider smart fitting rooms with the ability to detect products and customers as a showcase; a transaction dataset from a leading German fashion retailer; and contextual information about the time of purchase, the store type, and the weather conditions.
