General information

Core

In the Bachelor programme Wirtschaftswissenschaft, Statistics (Statistik) and Econometrics (Ökonometrie) are counted among the compulsory modules in the core elective Methoden. These courses should be attended in the second and third semester, respectively.

Statistics is regulary taught in the summer term. Relevant previous knowledge is not required. The contents of this lecture and of the accompanying exercise groups are coordinated with each other.

As from the winter term 2022 the course will be continued as Econometrics. The accompanying exercise groups will continue as well.

Core electives

Applied Econometrics (Angewandte Ökonometrie) takes place every semester (in winter term in German and in summer term in English). The course Data analysis (Praxis der Datenanalyse) only takes place in the summer term. Each cours counts 5 ECTS.

There is also the possibility to do an internship in a company that counts as key qualification (Schlüsselqualifikation). This counts 5 ECTS for a minimum duration of three weeks and 10 ECTS for at least six weeks. If you are interested, please contact  emily.fuchs@uni-wuerzburg.de

Requirements

To attend the courses, successful completion of the compulsory modules Statistics and Econometrics is recommended, but not mandatory.
Within your internship you should deal with the application of quantitative economic research.

Content of the courses

The main goal of the subject econometrics is the measurement (quantification) of economic relationships.
For this purpose, concepts of mathematical statistics are used to estimate the unknown parameters of an economic model on the basis of samples and to test model-based hypotheses.
In the context of the cours

•    basic concepts of model estimation and hypothesis testing are developped and applied.
•    practical implementation in standard software (R, Gretl and Excel) is learned.
•    possibilities, but also the limitations of estimation models are demonstrated.

Objectives of taking the core elective courses

The theoretical and practical work with estimation and testing methods is intended to provide a basis for independent empirical work. The critical handling of existing empirical findings also is taught.
In recent years econometric methods have become firmly established in many professional fields typically occupied by graduates of Economics. This is reflected in the fact that in many job advertisements for economists, knowledge in econometrics and/or statistics is at least desired.
